I haven't seen one of these threads in a while. I love hearing about people's injuries and how they got past them. I've sustained plenty of injuries myself and know it can be tough to get back in the rythm which is why I love learning about other people's experiences with it. Keeps me motivated. So feel free to post about your injuries in this thread.

As far as my own injuries:

1) Nagging left trap, hurt it during OHPs last year and then relapsed around new years. This was a byproduct of not having proper form, that has been fixed now. Had to take 1 month off training the first time and about 1-1.5 weeks off for the relapse, overall not a terrible injury and I learned my lesson on form.

2) Broke my nose ~2 months ago while tackling someone. Broke it in several spots and had to go under general anesthesia for about an hour for the surgery to fix it. 4 day long hospitalization, 1 week of sitting down on a couch after that and I couldn't workout for a month and lost 12-15 lbs of mostly muscle. I spent a bunch of time researching and following doctor's orders as closely as possible so I could get back in the gym asap. I also made some new routines just to pass the time and try them out when it was time to lift again. This helped keep me motivated.

3) Wrecked my wrist doing martial arts about a week ago so I had to step off of weightlifting again and I walk around with bandages on my wrist. I was just starting to see progress again (re-gaining the muscle mass I lost to my previous injury) and BAM! I got hurt again. I guess it comes with the territory. I'm a very active person and like to do dangerous/risky stuff like martial arts and tackle sports. I'm just hoping after this one heals I can dial it back up to 11 with my training!

So what are your injuries? What's been nagging you lately? What are you doing to change that? How have you dealt with time you're forced to take off the gym?

I've never liked taking time off. If anything, I'll do a light week for CNS recovery but never fully off unless I'm on a trip. However, I think that taking time off is how quitting starts. That's why I try to stay engaged and make new routines/think about my gains-to-come so I can stay motivated through injuries/forced breaks.

*cracks knuckles* where do I begin? lol

1. In high school, I was never taught how to power clean so I permanently injured my left wrist and as a result, my carpal bones translate far too much when doing wrist curls so I have to use wrist wraps.

2. In middle school, I subluxed my right shoulder and after that, I would frequently dislocate it (I'm also fairly certain I have Ehler's Danlos Syndrome but that's another topic altogether) it eventually required surgery to fix and really kept me from trying to work out for fear of messing it up again.

3. After I began getting back into shape recently, I developed a nasty case tennis elbow because of the above mentioned connective tissue disorder. I'm able to lock my elbow beyond "straight" and that's a perfect recipe for lateral epicondylitis. It took a few weeks of laser therapy, ultrasound, and e-stim as well as really focusing on form and technique before I noticed my elbow stopped hurting as bad.

4. Twice I've pulled my VMO doing squats until I learned to use my ass to slow my decent and not my quads. Both times weren't severe and were resolved over a weekend.

5. Currently, I'm suffering from a severe bruise or sprain in my left ankle. It's hard to tell because of the nature of the injury. I'm frankly embarrassed how it happened but if you can laugh at it then hey, more power to you. I was on the elliptical trainer doing a 15-minute circuit of 4 minutes at an easy pace and 1-minute full intensity. Did I mention that I've lost 140lbs? No? Well, I have and it's made my shoes fit a lot looser than what they should. As a result, on my last 1-minute circuit my foot began sliding around in my shoe and it was becoming uncomfortable so I tried to adjust my foot and it slipped out of the foothold and got caught for several repetitions on the opposite side before my foot caused it to stop. At first, it didn't hurt too bad, I was even able to make it down the stairs, but later at the grocery store, I thought I was going to have to have someone help me out to my truck it hurt so bad. I went home, popped 4 aleve and started icing it immediately. Today, as long as I'm wearing a shoe it feels fine and I can walk with a normal gait and range of motion, although it is still a little tender. I even did a leg workout today.

BTW, I have a degree in athletic training which is a branch of sports medicine. I have a similar skill set to a physical therapist but I work only with athletes, so injury care and prevention is right up my alley.

That's why I try to stay engaged and make new routines/think about my gains-to-come so I can stay motivated through injuries/forced breaks.

My injuries are the following. Thru injuries 2-5, I still continued training around the injuries/with the injuries as best I could:

1) 1973 - At age 9, I broke my right arm inches above the elbow. No pin could be used and the arm had to be set by hand. As such, my forearm is a bit off and the right tricep shrunk a bit due to the injury. As I have gotten older and have been training, the arm looks a bit deformed (to me) and the right tricep is a bit smaller and weaker than my left tricep. Now that I am older, I have to constantly watch for elbow tendinitis and avoid all exercises that put excessive strain on the tendon like French curls.

2) 2003 - Severally compressed the right Brachial Plexus (nerve bundle that controls the arms, shoulder, serratus, and rotator cuff muscles) doing heavy squats. Injury resulted in brachial neuritis (very painful) and 3 months of paralysis on the right side and significant wasting of my shoulder, serratus, and rotator cuff muscles. Injury took over 5 years to heal and strength is at 95% of pre-injury levels. Right side shoulder strength (pressing) was most affected.

3) 2013 - Tore my right bicep along the musculo-tendinous junction doing mixed grip deadlifts. Tendon was fine but bicep muscle is permantely shortened and aesthetically deformed. Took over 1 year to regain full strength.

4) 1997 - 1999 - Strained both shoulder rotator cuffs at various times when I was younger. Worst strain required 3 months of little to no lifting.

5) 2013 - Slightly tore my right calf muscle doing weighted calf raises. Fortunately took only 3 weeks to heal as it was a minor strain.

Looking for some advice on a couple old injuries from my fighting days.

Shoulder Injuries

I have dislocated both my shoulders back when I did jiu jit su about 10 years ago, and have had shoulder issues ever since. So when I do overhead press or exercises similar I can feel tension in my rotator cuff. If anyone knows of some alterations or overall advice for staying safe but working hard with those issues please I would love to hear about it.

Bone Fractures

Secondly, I double fractured my forearm when I was a kid and had alumanim plates screwed into my arm to set them back. That was also about ten years ago, and now when I do reverse grip bicep curls or similar workouts there is very sharp and intense pain in that broken forearm. I am assuming that the pain is in response to my forearm bone not flexing under stress but, that is just an assumption. Again, any advice/expertise on this topic would be amazing!

Thanks in advance for all the help!

hey man!!

So for shoulders, sounds like you have some left-over "junk" you need to workout of that area. You can start to work on this with some stretches. I will link a video.

As for the forearm pain... that one is hard. IF you havent training for a while having some pain in the middle is common as that is the weakest area. It should go away on its on as you train and the bones get stronger. But if it doent, let me know!
