Hey guys. I've had a shoulder injury for the past couple of months now that has forced me to stop working out my chest and shoulders.

Whenever I do exercises such as shoulder press, bench press, DB chest press, cable flies, machine flies, machine chest press, lateral raises and front raises, I always get a pain in my lower left shoulder after doing a bunch of reps.

This is where I'm talking about:

It only comes on after I do a few repetitions, and it worsens the more repetitions I do. If I try to push through it and finish my exercise, the pain lingers for a while after. I have no problem doing reverse flies for targetting the posterior deltoid, so it must be something to do with the middle or anterior deltoid.

I do not get the pain any other time beside when doing the exercises listed above. I'm able to train biceps, triceps, legs, back and core just fine, but can't train chest or shoulders. I've taken chest and shoulders off for a couple of weeks, then started off with an extremely light shoulder session and still felt it. I was able to get through the session because I was using very light weight, but again I still noticed it and it ached a for a little bit after the exercise.

I've been to the physio who says it's probably some sort of inflammation, and even suggested tendonitis. She gave me some resistance band exercises to do which I have been doing but seeing no improvements with. I tried dry needling as well which didn't seem to help. I'm organizing to see my doctor and hopefully get an ultra sound or even an MRI on it.

I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has had this problem or knows what it could be.

Thanks very much.

Sounds like you could have developed some shoulder tendonitus. Tendonitus of anything sux man! You are doing the right think on seeking medical attention but imo you need to just be easy on your shoulders. Probably going to need a few months off to rest and to let the inflamation go down. You don't want to push it or more serious injury may occur. What I do is find exercises that will work the muscle groups but not irritate like the others, always get a good warm up and stretching and maybe keep the weight around 50%-60% your 1 rep max. Don't lift heavy. I have Tendonitus in my forearms and I am lucky to be able to do any arm curls so I always keep em stretched and do othe bicep involved exercises so I can keep training. A good thing to try is to get a racket ball and put it between a wall and your shoulder and roll it around, that's work loose those shoulders.

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day. At the end of the day you would hope the physio knows what they are talking about. In my experience, an injury in one area of your body normally stems from other issues in other areas. Everything kind of connects, so if something's out of place or damaged or pinched (like a nerve) in your arm or your back, or possibly your chest, that could cause the pain in your shoulder.

Aaron might be right that you have tendonitis of some kind, but I'm not 100% what it might be.

Has the physio been doing some massaging around your whole body, checking anything that's tight?

Yeah I'm kind of worried it might be some sort of tendonitis as well.

The physio has been massaging my upper back and loosening that up quite a bit. I did feel an area in my upper left back next to my shoulder blade that I felt might be connected to my injury because of the type of pain I felt when she was digging into it.

I'm heading to the doctors on Wednesday so I can get an ultrasound to find out if it's tendonitis.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you have a slight muscle strain (tear) versus tendonitis. If you have torn muscle tissue, it takes time to heal and it heals over with scar tissue which is very easy to re-tear. I would see a physiotherapist and look into deep tissue massage and/or get an MRI done to determine if indeed it is a muscle strain or a ligament sprain - the treatments and outcomes are slightly different. Muscles strain and ligaments sprain - many people misuse these terms.

Hey guys, thanks for the help.

I went to the doctor today and he thinks it is tendonitis. He says I need to rest my shoulder and give it time to heal. I have taken off shoulders and chest for the past 3 or so weeks anyway, and he thinks I should give it another 1-2 weeks. What I might do is take chest and shoulders off until the end of the year, and once the new year starts I'll build up my strength again and then get stuck into Scott's new 12 week transformation program coming out in January :)

Sounds like a great plan to me @nonreg!! Hopefully your shoulder will be fully healed so you can go FULL THROTTLE with the challenge :D

Hey @Scott_Herman, thought I'd give you guys an update, I finally ended up getting an MRI on the shoulder and they found inflammation in there as well as a bit of fluid, and the surgeon thinks the fluid may be leaking out of a small tear in the labrum that the MRI didn't pick up. If that's the case I'll need to have surgery to fix it and I'd be out of the gym for 6 months and need to rehab for 2 months... firstly going to try a cortisone injection to see if it's just the inflammation and nothing else and see how it goes.

I've been out from the gym for 6 weeks now because of it and I'm itching to get back, don't think I could handle 6 months off :\
