Anyone else have wrist issues that impact push exercises? I have de Quervain's tenosynovitis in my right wrist, which is a form of tendonitis that affects the tendons at the base of the thumb. It makes supinating the palm difficult at times and can give me grief when performing push exercises. It is especially aggravated because the nature of my job involves lifting a lot of books and putting them back on shelves, and that repetitive motion can be a bit much for it at times.

 

I have a stiff putty that I use to do strengthening exercises, and I keep it braced while I'm at work. Oddly enough, if I take time off from the gym to rest it entirely, it gets so much worse. The only thing that improves it is exercising it. Just wanted to see if anyone else out there in the nation knows any stretches or exercises to help with something like this, or even if adding wrist wraps for some stability would be a good idea.

Well, I don't suffer from this, but my first thought would be wrist wraps. Have you tried using them before to see if it eases the pain when doing push exercises? Also, do you make sure to always keep your wrists straight when performing exercises? If you have bent wrists, this can lead to pain and problems with the wrist.

I agree with Scott. I would also make sure you are getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet from oily fish, egg yolks, flax seed meal, walnuts, and avocados. Omega 3's are fantastic for any type of joint issues as they are powerful anti-inflammatories and they promote lubrication of joints and connective tissue.

I haven’t tried wrist wraps yet, but as that was the direction I was leaning, I think I’ll give them a go. I try to be really conscientious about my wrists being straight - and believe me, this type of tendonitis DEFINITELY LETS YOU KNOW when they’re not - but I’m hoping wraps will encourage me to be more aware of that.

 

Unfortunately, sometimes my wrist can be totally straight without any load on it at all and it still twinges. Kinda the nature of the beast at times, haha! Lifting and running seem to be the two main things that keep it relatively pain-free. Keeping it strong and increasing blood flow, I’m guessing?

 

@jmboiardi - Awesome, thank you! I eat lots of egg and avocado, but I have a bunch of flax seed at home I keep meaning to use. Maybe I’ll put it on the countertop to remind me to start using it, haha!

Just remember to grind it if it is whole flax seeds versus flaxseed meal. Whole flaxseed pass right thru your digestive tract. You can use a blender or coffee grinder to grind them up if they indeed are seeds. Flaxseed meal is ground flaxseeds and can be eaten as is.

Also, try to eat foods high in sulfur like onions and garlic as sulphur is a key component of all connective tissues like ligaments and tendons. This will help keep the tendons in your hand more flexible and resistant to further damage.

John, I am Italian, so eating more garlic won't be a problem! 😉 

 

I was able to complete nearly my entire workout today without a smidge of pain! Just a bit on skull crushers, but since bench and shoulder presses were the two main culprits, I'm pretty happy.
