I'm a 58 year old man who used to mainly do endurance sports - long distance running, bicycling, canoeing, cross-country skiing. I started lifting weights 18 months ago, doing a split mass routine, using 3 sets per exercise with reps of 12-10-8. I recently started studying HEMA = Historical European Martial Arts: mainly the European long sword. For sword sparring one needs explosive power. A HEMA website recommended a 5 x 5 program to develop explosive strength. So I'm experimenting with this, but have added addition exercises to it, like curls, lat pull downs, etc. Essentially trying to reprogram my body for this sport. I'm 5'6", 160 lbs, approximate BMI is 18% .
