Scott and the rest of MS,

I have a buddy who has gotten into lifting and he mainly targets upper body (Benches 3 times a week, rarely hits legs..)

I have gone around the block with him about all of the science in lifting, why doing lower body at least as much as upper body is important.

I have explained why Squats (he doesn't do them) and Deadlifts (he doesn't do them) are important from a scientific point.

When I explain this his response is constantly something along the lines of, "Every body is different that's why I don't care about what science and what research says! I am doing what's best for my body."

I don't understand how I can convince this guy who is clearly displaying extreme ignorance that science isn't something you can just choose to accept or not be bound by if you don't accept it.

It is our law of measurement and knowing the unknown.

I have used arguments such as, "Science tells us if you are decapitated, you die... Someone can't just claim that they think they are different so it doesn't apply."

TLDR; My question: How do I explain to my friend that the science of lifting is in-fact real and that science is unchanged regardless of how you feel about it?

Deadlifts are fantastic for posterior chain, that's not belief it's fact.

Respectfully yours,

A frustrated patron.

Edit: A second question! Why are people like this at all??

@Mdg1337 Unfortunately some people just can't have their minds changed. At this point there's probably no use in you spending more of your time and energy trying to convince him otherwise. You've done what you can and now it's up to your friend to make their choice.

Maybe they just want to be like a lollipop - big up top but little to nothing in the lower half! Haha
