According to me, there is no such thing as "BEST TIME" to hit the gym, the only thing important is you get there and get things done.
This topic is always in debate as to hitting the gym in the morning would let you gain muscle quickly rather than any other time during the day. In my opinion, this doesn't suits everyone. You need to know your body, how your body response to your exercise time. For eg. working out in the morning/evening just because your trainer or legends did it, but you really are not able to give yor 100% at the gym doesn't make sense at all. You know your body more than anyone else would ever do. Just make sure you workout when you are fully charged, fueled and hydrated for it. This will help you give your 100% at the work you do and you will see max results.

My time: I workout at 8 in the evening after work because I have tried all the time slots and this one suits the best.

So nation, don't just follw what others say about specific time to workout, Respect your body and listen to it !!

i find training in the mornings beter . but thats just for me personally , id hit a quick burning carb chow at 5 am just as i get up then my pre-workout  pump maxx, then lie down for a few mins start a quick warmup of 20-30 reps with 3kg wheights , and start my workout raging at 5.30. that leaves me super pumped for the day , i am useless till about 8 am though , cause i leave everything in the gym. o yeah , i have a wheights and equipment  at home, so saves me a lot of trveling time.

Anthony thanx for the great site Scott.

Yes. weights at home are always better. I find it difficult to manage time with my pre-workout meal if I have to go in the morning, coz I am a working IT professional and travelling sucks all the time. So I find workout in the evenng my fruitful for me .!!!

This is a great post. I myself prefer to train in the afternoon because it allows me to get more calories and carbs in for fuel, but a lot of times I train in the morning and afternoon. Training in the morning really kick starts your day and greatly increases your appetite through out the day which is great when trying to gain muscle.

Oh man my schedule is all over the place, I work 3 swing shifts and 2 graveyard shifts so I'm always hitting the gym at different hours of the day. I completely agree that it doesnt matter what time you go, as long as you get in and get the work done!

The one thing that is a bummer though is when I want to do heavy cardio but I know I have to go to sleep soon. It's tough trying to go to sleep when the blood is pumping and the heart is racing! So i try and get the cardio in before work instead.

Yeah im exactly the same im a student so I have to fit in the gym as and when i can throughout the day. So I dont think there is an "optimum" time to train :)

I wouldn't say there is an optimal time to train either but I have found I get best results from evening training. Studies have concluded there is no difference between morning and evening workouts in terms of both hypertrophy and strength. I do remember one of my university lecturers saying how the nervous system is more "awake" as the day goes on so it could lead to strength increases during an evening workout. Another consideration when choosing workout times is that blood pressure is highest during the morning period so if you know you suffer from high BP its probably best to workout in the evening.

I get my best workouts in when I start around 2 or 3pm.  At this pooint if my workout takes about 2 hours or more I don't feel like I am rushing to get home because it is only 5pm the latest.

Man, I wish I could workout more often around that time! :)

When it comes to training time, you need to do what works best for you because everyone's metabolism, circadian rhythms, and schedules are different.  Numerous studies say the best time to work out is between 5pm - 7pm.  This is when most people's energy levels and hormone levels are ripe for the stresses of weigh training.  That being said, this is purely subjective.  I train at 3pm or 4 pm because after that my gym is too crowded and full of knuckle heads who don't really train seriously :-)   No disrespect intended but you all know the types - they hog a machine or lifting station and do 15 sets of God knows what in between texting on their cell phone.  Anyways, I have tried mornings, late nights, and I find the window of 3PM to 8PM the most ideal for me.   Listen to your body not the Internet :-)

John any chance you could get the links for the studies you mentioned? Would be interesting to have a read up :)

Daniel,

Unfortunatley I don't :-(  I remember doing various Google searches and perusing the info returned.  You might want to try that.  I do remember some of the studies were U.S. based and some were from Europe and Asia.

Hi there guys, when I was a student it's really hard to work out at your most desired time so I just stick to what time I'm available, but given a chance to choose, I like working out in the afternoon, around 1-3pm when it's warm (sometime's hot and there's no competition for oxygen ). Well anytime would be perfect as long as I'm working out, when in the morning it make's me feel like I can kick ass the whole day and when I work out at night it actually help's me have a good night sleep afterwards. I really wish there would be a time allotted for workout's in college and work.

How goes it damienneadle?! I haven't seen you in the forums in a while. Is school going good? My fiance is busting her butt in school right now so I imagine you're probably going through the same thing. Hope your workouts arent suffering!

Happy new years man, let's make it a year for gains!

Man I really like your views brotha! It would be so awesome to just have a time during class/work where it was like ok pause!

HAMMER CURL TIME!

hahaha that would be living the dream!!! I agree with you, as long as I'm working out that's all that matters to me man! But yeah i know what you mean, if i workout at the start of my day, I really feel like i can accomplish anything I set my mind to!

Then again if i workout toward the end of my day it's a good way to let out frustration and unwind before it time to call it quittin time. If i do cardio though there is no way I could plan on going to sleep any time soon after cuz that's when my blood is really pumping and i'll be so wired!

Happy new year brotha! Hope your making all kinds of gains!
