Hey guys.

I know Scott has covered it in forums and in vidoes, that in order to loose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit and that you cannot put on lean muscle while loosing weight.

The exception being when you first start to really work out and lift weights (which I really experienced when I first started working out 3 years ago; the fat seemed to melt off with over 50lbs down in the first 3 months yet was making considerable strength and lean muscle gains).

My question is, can this initial rapid loss of fat and gains in muscle be reset with extended time away from the gym or an extented period of time with less than intense workouts?

Last year was a bad year with health issues (taken care thankfully) and minor injuries (rolled ankle, minor tear in shoulder etc) and as such went from advancing in PPL and making a lot of strength/lean muscle gains and keeping my inital 60+lbs of fat loss off, to not working out for a couple weeks at a time, with less than intense workouts being the norm.

I am getting back to the routine of daily cardio and weight training 6 days a week and regaining that stamina, strength, lean muscle that has deteriorated with the main focus on fat loss as I put on 40lbs over that year. I know I will get back and surpass where I was a year ago, but a friend asked if that "golden period" resets or would one have to do little to no exercise at all for an extended period.

So far 2 weeks in and down 7+ lbs overall, with some stamina increases.

Hey @fenrispack!

You will see gains fairly quickly after an extended time away from the gym. I kind of covered this in my video last week about muscle memory regarding steroid cycling. So you can expect to basically get back to where you were before your extended break, probably in a matter of weeks or months if you get back into your training and diet consistently. If you gained 40lbs, then obviously it's going to be more like months to shred that off, but it should be over the same kind of 2-3 month period as when you first started.

Then it will slow down and it will be back to normal pace from there. If you were still training sort of bi-weekly then it may take slightly longer.. it depends on just how lacklustre your workouts were. You've dropped 7lbs in 2 weeks so I'd say give it that 3 month period and you should be back to your previous weight and back on track!

Thank you for the response Scott (I am a little late getting to it). That is re-encouraging and focusing on it hardcore again and making a challenge to see how much I can loose before the end of May (Vegas trip scheduled); once I get a lot of this body fat off, going to restart the PPL program as it did wonders for putting on the lean muscle mass and strength last year. Keep up the great work, love your videos esp explaining why or when to do an alternate exercise (drag curls vs barbel bicep curls etc)

It just takes a lot patience. I'm currently burning 20 pounds off and I've burned 13 punds and my strength has suffered a little bit as a result. As long as you stick to the process you'll get to where your shooting for. You got this!

I'm 27, I'm male, I'm trying to maintain a healthy but nice physique. I weigh about 195, 6'0 I've got four large passions in my life! Sports! My Lord and Savior! P.E.! And last but not least..... My wife! HTH! I have other goals, just ask if you want to know! My handle is Big Boss, but you can just call me Allan. Finally, always remember, HTH!

Thanks guys. I have regained most of the stamina where I am up to 20 minutes of cardio(used to do 40) with 90 minutes of weights. Was just curious if the "golden period" of loosing weight and making strength/muscle gains, resets after extended time off; can see that it does.

Yeah muscle memory kicks in! Make the most of it while you can man, you got to capitalize on that golden period. Keep going with the cardio too, you will be back to your regular sessions soon!

I hit a plateau on my fat loss and was starting to get a little frustrated. Started out at 212 and was stuck around 193-195 for awhile.

Decided to finally stop caring about the pounds dropping off and began focusing on gaining muscle, checking my macros, and what do you know???

188.9 this morning and just dropped below 20% fat for the first time in a couple years!!!

Congrats Wesley! It's crazy how the body works sometimes haha. All that muscle building training probably helped you burn more calories to drop some pounds and fat! Keep up the good work man!
