I have noticed that my grip strength is starting to hold me back in sever exercises. I try not to use wrist wraps if I can avoid it prefer to stay all natural.

i was wondering if anyone hade ideas or suggestions on how to help build grip strength.

thank you

Joe

Joe,

You are off to the right start by avoiding lifting straps. Since you use your grip for the majority of exercises, your forearm size and strength will increase over time - just push as hard as you can with as much weight as you can. There may be instances where you will need to resort to straps to properly tax a muscle group. Back is one muscle group that grows in strength faster than most forearms can keep up. Don't sacrifice back size for forearm strength unless you plan on being a strength athlete :-) Exercises that really help strengthen the grip are:

1) Deadlifts

2) Rows - any type

4) Pull-ups and weighted pull-ups

5) Curls especially hammer curls

6) All forearm exercises like wrist curls

I can always feel my forearms have been worked after a back workout.

To try and increase growth and strength in the forearms, I have also started to do exercises like wrist curls at the end of my workout after the forearm has already been smashed!

You could also try iron bull strength grips - I have been thinking about getting some in order to aid my own grip strength.

Thank you, dead lifts is the mane exercise where I see my grip truly lacking.

Thank you, I'll incorporate some wrist curls/raises on top of hand squeezes.

i have thought about getting the Iron Bull Strength Grips might just have to do that.

thank you

wris curls wont develop strength just overall fatigue of the muscle during the workout, the strength of your forearms comes from holding onto stuff for long periods of time, stuff like wrist curls... its not functional, functional training is the best way to develop strength, so, rack pulls... my number one favorite for grip strength... i can rack pull 210 without straps... grip doesnt fail, do carrys with the shrug bar, just hold a dumbbell... just hold anything... put a resistance band on the post or whatever, take a few steps back and open and close your hand to develop the gripping aspect of the forearms, worst comes to worst all you do is either drop the weight or the resistance band flicks against the wall

Do all the above and also include farmer's walk/carry which is also a great exercise for grip and it activates different muscles for example forearms, traps, abdomen, glutes, hamstring, etc

here's the guide:

Farmers Walk (you can do it with dumbbells too)

Beat me to it, farmer's walk is good, or if your gym is too small, just simple static holds (make it more interesting by standing on one leg, better balance is always good right?). Basically, any exercise where you have to hold your hands in a gripped position will challenge them to get better at holding that grip position.

Yeah I would agree with most of the comments above. Utilise functional grip strength so do deadlifts, famers carries etc. Please do not be afraid to use straps though. You will never develop a good back if your grip is always failing before your back. I always use straps on my back exercises if I cannot grip the weight for a long enough period to create sufficient time-under-tension.
