Hello there everyone, i have a 'problem', my chest is to big compared to my other muscles, specially my arms, while i don't have small arms, they are not really big either.

I have kinda stopped training chest by now, only doing bench press and cable crossovers, and since i have acumulated some fat due to dirty bulk i'd like to go on a cut now, so im wondering if it's still possible to get a bit more muscle on my bicep, while in cut.

Thanks in advance

Hey man whats up!

Bench press is by far the best chest exercise, and doing it alone, will build you a huge chest. If you really have an imbalance like this, you should a) stop working chest until you are happy with your arms or b) continue working it but at least make sure your back is balancing your chest.

We never compare chest to biceps. It is not important. What is important is back to chest ratio. If you are happy with your back, keep training chest, and eventually your arms will catch up if you are hitting them correctly.

It is not possible to add muscle while on a cut unless a) you are a complete beginner b) you were previously under-training c) you are on anabolic drugs. If you do not fall in those categories, it will be near impossible to increase your biceps while on a caloric deficit.

Finally, most people dont get big biceps and/or triceps because they are not focusing on compound movements. They do bench for their chest so their chest grows but they dont do chin-ups for biceps and dips for triceps. Various curling exercises work the bicep of course, but not like a heavy compound movement does. Have that in mind when you go on your next bulk, and make it a "clean" bulk.

Thanks alot for the well written answer, and in fact i think my back is sort of a problem too, it isn't as wide as it should be.

The traininer from my gym has given me the following training to see if i get a bit more lats: Lat pulldown with 2 diferent bars 4x10 each, lat pulldown behind the neck 4x10, and 4x10 seated machine row.

Whats your opinion on that? Should i also delay my cut, for like 1 month trying to even my body?

Also, and sorry for so many questions :p, should i be doing chin ups after i've done my bicep workout or at the start? same for dips on tricep.

Hey dude, lets see here..

First of all, I dont like trainers because the vast majority of them dont really know what they re saying, and their advice is not optimal for the clients. They usually just try to keep you safe so that you cant blame them if something goes wrong. There are always exceptions of course.

When we speak of back strength, we dont just mean the lats. We mainly speak about the muscles in the center of the back, running across your spine. This routine you provided above is unbalanced and is not gonna cut it. You have 3 pulldowns and 1 row. And the row is a machine. I have written an article on this subject and I think it will help you greatly. Go read it, and tell us your opinion as a reply to this comment. http://scotthermanfitness.com/articles_viewer.php?rID=46

If you are under 20% body fat, I wouldnt approach a cutting phase, until you have corrected this issue. I would postpone it for a month as you said. Of course you can go for a minicut ( 4-8 weeks) and then return and attack it from the start. Thats your option. :)

Thats it!

EDIT : just saw your last question :P Chinups and dips are big compound movements and should be performed at the start. Even if you left chinups for your last exercise, you probably wouldnt be able to do more than 2-3 reps, unless you are really strong. If you are that strong I would start my bicep routine with weighted chinups.

I will read that article a bit later, night probably, as i don't really have the time right now.

About the training you are 100% right, this is a small city gym, there are only about 2 in here, and he really doesn't give a shít.

I've been working out for 2 years, and i've been doing my own routine based on internet for about 1 year and 8 months(probably the reason why i have some body imbalances), once i realized he didn't care at all, and all his programs were bullshit.

The reason i've following this one though, its because its what he does for back, he is really jacked(i know it doesnt mean anything but...), and so far i kinda like the results. i am seeing more lat muscle on me, and thats the major problem with my back , i already got some strong middle back muscles.

I kinda feel sorry for the woman in this gym, the training he gives them is pure bullcrap, does nothing for them, and i can't really aprooch them like i do with some of the newcomers men who lift weighs.

Here is is program he gives most of them : A bit of eliptical, some front raises with 1kg or something like that, bicep curl machine with no weight at all, peckdeck(-_-), 4x12 leg press with almost no weight, and 1 set of abs..

Thanks alot for your help so far, i will read that article later today, and figure what i want to do next.

No problem, glad i could help. I go to the same type of small city gym and the situation is the same. I know this sounds awful but when you see someone with a great body, always assume they are on drugs. By doing this you can evaluate their advice and see things more clearly. Just assume, dont blame though :D Just make sure it works for you and you will make huge progress.

I've been completly ignoring him for all this time i've been working out there but since my current program wasnt really working out for me anymore, i dicided to follow his to see if i had any results, he is probably in some kind of drugs since he is already 55 and really jacked.

Great advice man, the only thing that i would advise is to not completely stop training chest. It would suck if he quit chest for a few months and then his strength went down to nothing.

I would keep training chest but don't go super heavy, just focus on few sets of high volume to keep the strength up. What do you think?

Yea he can definitely do that. If he de-trains the chest he will at least keep it the same, while he is working on growing the weaker muscle groups. I would only advise someone to completely stop training chest if we are talking about a severe imbalance.

Looks like you got some really good advice here!

If I were you I would switch to something like a 5x5 for your chest. Don't STOP training chest, but switching to a strength program can help you maintain your size while working on other muscle imbalances.

Also, sounds like this trainer is a real douchebag. If you want a big bag you need to stick to basics. Pull-ups, weighted ull-ups, barbell bent over rows, Single-Arm Dumbbell Rows, Lat pull-down, reverse at pulldown and focus on 3-4 sets of 12-15 reps.

Looking forward to seeing your results! #HTH
