Hey Nation, I seem to have a really big sweet tooth and after a few weeks of eating clean i cave in to something which most of the time ends up turning into a snow ball effect and eating crap for a day or two haha. Was wondering how you guys get around sweet tooths or any other cravings you may have?

Cheers

Mike,

The human body is a very smart machine.  It learns, remembers, and constantly adapts.  Cravings are usually the result of not supplying something your body needs so it yearns for what it remembers was the easiest food to fullfill this need. "Sweet tooths" mean your body loves glucose.  When you eat "clean", what do you eat?  When you have these cravings, what do you eat to satisfy them?

It also depends on how long you have been eating clean.  Your body needs to "break" bad habits and learn new ones to supply its nutrients.  If you were a big soda drinker or ate a lot of simple sugars like what is typically found in the heavily processed foods of Western and OZ/Kiwi diets, your body hasn't learned and adjusted to eating "clean" sugar from non-processed foods - fruit, oats, brown rice, etc.  I have been to Australia 12 times and NZ 2 times and I see that their diets are not much better, in my opinion, than the U.S. as far as being less processed or having higher nutritional value :-)  Alcohol counts as a sugar as well so you need to add this into the equation as it effects cravings to some degree as this is a "simple" yet non-nutritional fuel your body can use similar to sugar.  You need to fight these cravings and reach for some fruit or other cleaner burning foods to train your body.  If this is just an intermittent thing that happens infrequently, go with the flow and eat what you want.  Eventually these cravings will diminish or disappear forever as your body adapts to eating better.

Hi John,

Eating clean consists of

Breakfast: Rolled oats, pineapple, banana, sliced almomnds and unsweetened youghurt

Snacks: whole boiled eggs, almonds, brazil nuts, bananas, rice thins with lite cottage cheese.

Main meals: beef or chicken, vegies and brown rice

will try and satisfy them by fruit or youghurt but wil end up eatting cookies, slices, chocolate then rolls into eating fast foods and bakery food. Yes kiwi diets are very poor and mine was poor until about 4 moths ago when i began eating clean and have had good results from doing so!

I dont drink much alcohol at all even though i use to but that is one thing i dont crave. I will do my best to resort to fruit next time i get these cravings! Cheers for the advice John

Mike,

This is a good meal plan especially since you are new to eating clean.  Your cravings are your body adjusting to eating clean.  Fight them hard and eat a piece of fruit or try some protein.  With time and will power, they will go away.   Try to remember how hard you train and how good you feel now that you eat good every time a craving arises.   Fight it and be strong :-)

You know, erica and I have been focusing on DEXTROS after our workouts.  So we have 1-2 SMARTIES or 2-3 PIXY STICKS (candy) and the results have been great.

Maybe you cando the same thing to both curb your sweet tooth and also help with your gains as well.

Google DEXTROS AFTER WORKOUTS to see what I mean.  Erica is writing an article about it too.

what is a good clean diet ?

Eating "Clean" is interpruted by many in different ways.I encounter this daily as most people "think" they are eating clean but once asked they procede to tell you the opposite. We live in a OBESE America and its no wonder with all the chemicals in everything.Even the raw vegies we consume(if you smart)unfortunately are genetically modified(GMOs).These chemicals cause a host of metabolic issues and its no surprise we all learn of someone we know has Cancer these days. This is in the GOOD foods. All the so-called "quick and easy"premade foods now are LOADED with nitrates, phosphates, etc. Our bodies can not process this crap!

My idea of eating clean is simple:

Raw veggies(plenty of fresh, rich greens with colorful ones as well....NOT cooked),

Chicken or Turkey(no fish.....high in Mercury),

Essential fats(ex-virgin Olive oil,Flax oil,nuts,seeds.

NO SUGAR OF ANY KIND,with the exception of a little honey on my Oats in morning,

NO FRUIT....NO DAIRY....Definately NO ALCOHOL!

Eat as Raw and untouched as possible!

Great post Gerry.  I would just comment that fish has more benefits than harm.  Mercury is higher in large predatory fish like tuna.  It is really only of concern for pregnant women and small children.  Salmon as well is mostly farmed unless you can find and pay the higher price for Alaskan salmon.  Again, fish has lots of POP's and other pollutants but the benefits of the fish outweigh any potential harm.  I eat all my vegetables raw and most of the veggies here in Sout East Asia are natural.  Genetic modification happens with big crops like corn, wheat, tomatoes and mostly in the US.   Fruit is something not to be avoided.  It is high in antioxidants and fiber and fructose is a sugar that is processed differently from glucose.

Thanks Bro but fruit is sugar no matter how "natural" it may be.Sugar is sugar. One peice a day is ok.

Mercury in any amount is bad.Its linked to mental illnesses and intestinal disorders.Id limit the fish to once a week.

Gerry,

Fair enough.  Many people need to watch their sugar intake.  As for mercury in fish, for healthy adults the mercury exposure is no more hazardous than what we get from tooth fillings made with mercury (if you still have some like I do).  I agree mercury is very toxic but it is not in all fish.  Salmon does not contain it in measurable quantities.   You need to avoid tuna, mackerel, sword fish, shark, and other large predatory fish if you are worried about mercury.   Salmon, cod, halibut, haddock, etc are fine.   I eat fish everyday for dinner but 5 days are salmon 2 days are tuna.  Fish and eggs are better than beef, chicken, and turkey if you want to get real lean.  I eat chicken, fish, and eggs as my main protein sources.   If I could get grass fed beef here in Singapore, I would add some in to my diet but in general I don't like meat as it takes longer for my body to digest and like you said in your first post, it is rife with drugs and hormones.

Not really, fruits have specific enzymes in them that help your body digest the fructose (sugar).  Much different than just chopping on a tablespoon of sugar :)

I wouldn't swear fish off so quick either.  Lot's of cultures consume very large quantities of fish.  But I agree with John and his fish suggestions.  Grear job man, I love Salmon!
