Hey everyone,

I'm 14 (almost 15) and I have been working out at a gym for about 7 and a half months. I started at the very bottom, literally skin and bones. since I have started I have put on roughly 27lbs of (hopefully) muscle. I had been working out at my local YMCA gym for that 7 and a half months, but it didn't have alot to offer equipment/free-weight wise. Just the basics: dumbbells over 30 years old, old-fashion metal plates, etc. so, just as a change, I just switched over to the only other gym in my town, an Anytime Fitness. It's pretty nice, and everything is pretty new... but I'm really getting off track of why I'm typing this...

I started coming just this tuesday, I had been in one other time with a friend of mine who powerlifts (I also hav a bodybuider friend). I workout 6 days a week, and im always trying new things. My routine this week started out at the Y, then tuesday I switched over to Anytime. I worked:

Sunday: Quads, calves, and glutes (as a secondary)

Monday: good old chest with a light tricep workout at the end

Tuesday: Hamstrings and my entire core (lower back, obliques, abs)

Wednesday: Upper back (Really focusing on those pll-ups)and finished off with forearms

Thursday: Shoulders and core (just obliques and abs this time)

Friday: arms (biceps, triceps, brachs, and a little bit of forearms)

I tend to mix in a little bit of cardio throughout the week.

I know this schedule has some flaws, but I need some help fixing it. I like working core twice a week (I do a completely different routine for each day), and i like working forearms hard at least once a week.

I'm really enjoying this split for my legs, but I was wondering if it could be improved. also, I'm always up for new combinations (like maybe hamstrings and core next week) but I want some guidance. Any advice or critiquing would be helpful.

Thanks,

Brady

No problem about the post, we will have the post moved to the right section.

so about your question..

First of all, lets be realistic. You are 15 years old. That means you are not able to build muscle at the fastest rate possible. Having that in mind, its impossible to have put on 27lbs of muscle in 8 months. For a natural athlete with peak testosterone levels ( 19-25 years old), 27lbs of muscle need at least 3-4 years of hard work. It is realistic that you might have put on 10lbs of pure muscle in that time though, which is amazing progress.

Now about the program. Its definitely way too much. You are training 6 days a week but more is not always better. Actually most of the time, more is worse. Starting out, you will make gains with whatever program you stick to, because you are a beginner. And you did make some gains. After that you need to be smart about your programming and recognize the value of recovery and rest days. For a natural gym goer, 3-4 training days and 3-4 rest days are usually optimal.

Your split looks like a split a Mr.Olympia bodybuilder would stick to, in order to correct small muscle imbalances. You would make a lot more gains and progress sticking to a simpler workout program. If a beginner uses an advanced program, he will either make no progress or very little progress. So, you should consider something simpler, like full body workouts 3 times a week. Another option is upper body/lower body split or push/pull split. Anything that will let you hit your muscles at least 2 times a week. 3 times is probably best.

Having a shoulder day or a chest day as a beginner is simply a waste of valuable time. Because you could have been hitting more muscle groups at the same day. So its a matter of managing your time in the gym better. Hamstring and core days, thats the first time I have ever heard that :D At your age and level 5x5 squats will do much more for your hams and core than a specific day of 5-6 ham+core exercises. See where this is going?

I appreciate the advice. I know it is sort of a complicated plan, and like i said, I'm always trying out new combinations. I have never had the same exact workout program for more than two weeks in a row. I realise its probably "beginner's gains" for my muscles, but despite that I feel that I have become fairly capable at listening to my body, acknowledging when a muscle needs more time to recover, and avoiding things that feel uncomfortable. As for the splitting my leg workout into two seperate days, I am really enjoying it, and I feel that my legs have grown stronger, faster because of it. At Anytime, there are several young powerlifters, and both them and their coaches are strong believers in splitting the leg workouts into two seperate days. My main interests are strength and endurance. I hope to someday be the kind of guy to run obstacle courses, do things SIMILAR to crossfit ( I put emphases on that because crossfit gets alot of hate) and even try to compete in extreme things like Ninja Warrior. (not too realistic, but still) People at both of my local gyms tell me they have never seen someone so young with such dedication, energy, and determination. Some even make jokes that I must snort lines of pre-workoutt before I come. I know I am still young. I know I haven't reached my prime, but I believe that I am capable of a six-day program. I didn't mean any of this to come off offensive by refusing your advice, I just feel that I needed to tell you this.

Thank you,

Brady

First of all, make sure you are not taking advice from people that are on drugs. You will get results doing anything, if you are on drugs. And unfortunately the majority of people who are really strong or really big or really aesthetic are on drugs.

i will not get into detail about specific splits but one thing is definitely certain. Research has shown that for a workout program to be successful, you have to follow it for at least 4 months as a beginner. If you get really advanced after 5 years of training, you may have to change it sooner than that. If you change your program every 2 weeks, you never let your body adapt and ultimately recover. Your body gains strength/endurance by adapting to a specific stimulus. The vast majority of powerlifters never change the core of their workouts. They might change it after a year of training or even 2 years. Switching small isolation exercises at the end of your workout is fine because they wont give you significant results anyway.

I understand its fun to do different things all the time ( I fell into that trap too when I was young) but its just counter-productive and may even lead to injury down the line.

What I m saying here is not what I have noticed with myself or with others. Its what years of scientific experiments have revealed. Working out 6 days instead of 3-4 will absolutely not provide any more gains. Its almost certain that it will provide less gains and possibly an injury. Could you be an exception? Could you be what we call a "genetic freak". Maybe. But we cant give advice based on minorities.

I understand. I really appreciate everything you're saying to me. I'll quit switching my plan so often. I still plan on trying new things, but as you said, I will stick to a "core" workout program.

I understand your concern of me taking advice from "cheaters", but I know for a fact that most of my friends/acquaintances are completely drug free. One friend, the bodybuilder, is constantly getting hate over his incredible size and physique. People have claimed him to be a steroid user, yet he is totally clean when he is tested proir to his show. I believe he is totally clean, but even if he is not, I don't really take any advice from him. I do most of my research myself.

As far as me being an exception, I'm no Arnold or @BillyImpactsFitness (damn his genetics!), but I think I'm more resilient than most kids my age. After the near-death hell I went through for over 6 months at the beginning of 2013. I'll say it again, I truly do appreciate your advice. I know I am far less developed than someone in their early 20s, but I still feel that I am capable of putting the same stress on my body. Might I remind you, us "kids" seem to have superhuman abilities when it comes to healing and performance. ;D

Well... "show testing" doesnt mean an Athlete didn't juice his brains out months before the show... but I am not saying anything about your friend. He could for sure be a genetic freak. Just want you to know that passing a "show drug test" doesn't mean anything other than you are not on drugs around the time of the show.

What happened to you that was near-death man?

and yeah, Billy is one strong kid!! I was so surprised her was 14 when I met him!

Very good point about Sam (my bodybuilder friend) I still personally think he is clean, but I can't prove it. Either way he's a nice guy. Sort of like a big teddy bear that could tear me in half. Lol

I have what I suppose you could call a summary of the Hell I went through in My Story on my profile page. the actual story is very long and very painful to think about. But if you do want to know a little more, I would gladly answer any questions.

And I'll admit that I envy Billy's strength. haha. He must have extremely low Myostatin levels. the Lucky kid... Even though he's squatting a hell of a lot more than me, he needs to go a little lower. I live by your motto: Ass to grass. In my opinion, it's not a real squat if its not past 90 degrees.

Yeah man. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter if someone is natty or not. The only time it gets on my nerves is when people claim natty but are juicing. I have many friends who juice, but they don't lie about it. It's their choice and at the end of the day if you want to make bodybuilding a career an want to win Mr. Olympia one day.. well.. it's not the protein that gets those guys huge haha, but they also do train VERY hard.

I read your story. Not sure what happened, but if I went from 171 down to 80lbs.. I wouldn't know what to do.

So pumped to have you hear my friend. Maybe try retyping your story in WORD so you can save it incase the system crashes. We had a auto login issue that was recently fixed.

Hope to see some progress pics soon! #HTH
