I'm 15, turning 16 in less than a month. I want to join a gym and I know gyms like to lock you into a contract. Planet Fitness is pretty cheap since its $10 dollars a month. Is it a good gym? Is it worth joining? I'm currently working out at home with very little equipment. During the summer my school's weightroom is open for sports teams. My friend on track sneaks me in, but sometimes the coach catches me and kicks me out. I only want to go during the summer with a couple of friends.

I want to know

-Does it lock you into a contract? If it does, how long is the contract and do I HAVE to sign a contract to join? I only wanna go for 3 months.

-Do you need to be 18? and If you aren't 18 do you need parents permission or do they just not allow you to join

-Do they have dumbbells, barbells, and heavy bags? (I heard they have a lot of machines thats why I'm asking)

-What kind of machines do they have?

I go to 24 hour fitness but have a friend that does go to planet fitness.

As far as what he told me the contract is a one year contract. It's $10 per month or $20 and you can bring 2 people along with you everytime.

You have to be 18 or have a legal guradian with you when you sign up.

My friend says they have everything a normal gym has including barbells, dumbells etc. I would check yelp for more pics or call the club and ask.

As for whether it's a good gym or not me and my other friends always make fun of planet fitness because they have these ridiculous ads where they give out free pizza every monday of the first month and free bagels & coffee the second tuesday of each month. It's like they want people to continuing eating junk so they stay there lol. But for my friend that goes he says it gets the job done for him. Overall I would say do more research into the specific planet fitness you're looking into. Yelp reviews would be a good place to start.

PLEASE dont go planet fitness. its the worst gym in the world. they dont allow squats, deadlifts, have very few dumbells.  I can go on and on about how bad it is there. basically, they dont allow anyone to train instense and if you want to grow and make progress, you need to train like a beast.

planet fitness is better than no gym at all. I just want to go there for 3 months. But since there's a contract for one year I'm probably not going to go.

Have you tried to see if you could do a 3-month or 6-month membership at Gold's in SF?

Maybe at yours. we can deadlift and squat. loads of dumbells and theres some pretty big guys at ours. we rotate between 2 locationns and both are the same.  its actually not a bad gym at all.
as far as age you can be 15 with parent wavier or 18 to do it yourself.

Dunno what to put here

Not yet, I didn't even know there was a Gold's Gym in SF. haha. I'm looking for something not too expensive but thanks, I'll look it up. I've been searching on Yelp lately.

Actually I just checked, theres no Golds Gym here.

Doh!  Sorry, I meant World's Gym.  It is on De Haro street.

At the end of the day brotha, ANY GYM is better than no gym and as long as you apply what you learn here you will be fine.

Also, if you find a gym you really like, offer them a proposition.

When I was the General Manager at a gym I used to have kids come in and clean the gym for 4 hours on every Saturday for a FREE membership.  In fact, that is what I started to do when I was 14 and it is how I got into the gym life.

Go in with your parents and ask to talk to a manager and ask them if you can come clean for free (clean equipment, rack all the weights on the floor, etc) for a free membership.  I doubt they will turn that down! It costs them nothing

I really agree with Scott on this, at the end of the day a gym is a gym. Yeah I think it's horrible that they offer pizza but they do have the equipment there to apply a lot of the routines that are here on SHF.

People make fun of planet fitness all the time, but when people ask me where I got so big, I look them straight in the eye and tell them "Planet Fitness". haha just look at my profile photo. For where I live, Planet Fitness is the only gym that is open 24 hours a day so I'm kinda stuck there because of my busy schedule.

I would also take Scotts advice and see if you can volunteer for a free membership! That is freakin' genius man! Good luck!

2 year #SHF athlete I love to train hard and help others when they want it.

hahaha yeeaah. Thanks. I'm getting sick of working out at home because I don't get results fast enough so I need any gym I can get into. I should just join a sports team in my school so I can use their weightroom but I don't have time for that.
