Hello guys and girls!

So I have been strength training for about 4 years.
In August 2017, I had a motorcycle accident where I severely damaged the fibula and tibia bones of the left leg. The surgeon has fitted two titanium blades on both bones which I will hopefully remove as soon as the bones have healed 100%. Unfortunately, a part of my tibia was shuttered into little pieces and the fibula broke sort of sideways so the full recovery will take a long time.

Five months later, in January 2018, I started walking without the use of crutches and slowly started training again mostly the upper part of my body but I can manage some leg exercises mainly the top half of the leg. It's quite frustrating seeing other people at the gym doing squats and deadlifts but I have a positive mindset and hopefully I will soon be able to exercise my whole body.

This whole injury, although I consider myself lucky, made me quite depressed for a while since before the accident I was a very active person and I was training at least 5 times a week. I was training at the gym but I was also training at a crossfit box.

Anyone had a similar injury before? How long did it take you to train legs again? Any tips and advice?

Zoi

Hey @Zoi!

Sorry to hear about your accident - sounds like it was pretty serious with the breaks that went on. I've never had an injury like that before so I can't really say what the time period for a full recovery to where you can train legs again is. I'd say it's something you have to talk to your surgeon about.

I would think that by the 5-6 month stage you would almost be at the point where you can at least start doing some bodyweight/light exercises to start strengthing the muscles again now that you are off crutches? That would be a good start but again, it's something you probably need to check with your surgeon.

Keep your head up and keep grinding though. It will take time but if you do everything right I have no doubts you'll be back to training legs really soon and stronger than ever!! 🏋

Sorry to hear about your accident/injury and thankfully it wasn't worse. I have not had an injury of your extent but what I can tell you is bone heals much stronger at a break - even with plates - than it was prior. When you feel confident that leg training will not cause any issues, this will be the best thing for you to do. The body will sense the stress and make your shin bones even stronger. This will also help promote further healing and strengthening of the area over time so you shouldn't have issues as you age. Exercise is a great to get the body back to pre-accident levels :-)

Thank you for the replies. I am currently able to train the adductors and glutes by doing both bodyweight exercises and using machines . Today I will have a go and start air squats and she how it goes. :)
