I have been very sick the past five days, and I know there are a lot of people out there dealing with the lovely sick season. I had all the great side effects; body aches, runny nose, sore throat, fever, stomach ache, and all those lovely things. The first day all I wanted to do was lay in bed. While I did make sure I rested and stayed away from work, I still motivated myself to go through my daily choirs. This really helped me mentally get out of the mindset of being sick. Sometimes when we are sick, we like to make it worse by thinking how sick we are and how we cannot do anything. Here are some quick tips on getting through your sick days without sacrificing your busy life.

  1. Stay hydrated! This is important when you are not sick but even more when you are losing fluids from being sick. Stick with water, orange juice, or some Gatorade.
  2. Take a warm shower in the morning. This really helped me feel refreshed and not all gross from being sick.
  3. Get a strong start in the morning. Try to get all the important stuff done at the beginning of the day so you can rest more later on at night.
  4. Workout! I think a little working out when you are sick is good. Of course if you have a fever of 105 and are throwing up maybe not so much. I kept pushing myself in my workouts, which I think really made me feel better faster.
  5. Get your mind right! Try to think and go on as if you are not sick. Read some motivating books or watch a movie that makes you feel better and get the right mind set.
  6. Eat! Even if all you can stomach is a smoothie, make sure you are not completely sacrificing all your macros for the day.

Try following these tips next time you are sick. Do not let being sick ruin your holiday season. We all know it isn’t convenient being sick, but with the right mind set and some simple actions we can make it much better for ourself!

Spot on Jennifer.  I would only add to point #4 that you really should only workout when you are nearing the end of your sickness.  When you are sick, your immune system is highly taxed fighting the infection and needs water, food, and rest.  If you also add working out into the mix you actually delay your recovery.  It is best to do as you have suggested but not start working out again until you feel better.

Great tips, many people I know don't like to eat when they get sick and just want to slump in bed for a good 1-2 weeks.

Luckily for me I haven't gotten sick since May. I decided to make it a goal a while back not to get sick this school semester and it has worked so far. What I've changed from previous years and semester is

- exercise 3-5 days a week (whether it's lifting, running, or playing bball)

- eat fruits/ veggies everyday

- squeeze one lime everyday and drink the juice

- drink a lot of water (about 64oz+ a day)

- wash your hands!!!! (cannot stress this enough)

- have good time management so I'm not stressed since going to school full time, working, volunteering, spending time with friends/ family can keep me quite busy.

By following these I think I've increased my immune system or I just got lucky since the flu season isn't as bad this year I think. I just remember last year from August-Dec I got sick like 3 times and it took like 2 weeks to fully recover each time. I go to school full time and started working at a hospital too so my chances of catching something is probably higher compared to the average joe.  But suprisenly I haven't been sick since May *knock on wood, and hope i don't get sick lol

Yeah I would definitely agree with that. I think moving a little and doing some stretching and light stuff is good, but not your full on usual routine. I mostly foam rolled and did some yoga which helped a lot!

Those sound like some awesome changes you made to keep from getting sick! A great addition to that would be taking an antioxidant supplement. This helps fight so many free radicals and will help keep you from getting sick. Plus antioxidant have a lot more benefits too. I think you should post in the forum on how to not get sick, which would be a nice addition to my post on what to do when you are sick. You already have some great ideas in just this post!
