Hi everyone I have just been starting to deadlift.

From demo videos I watched, the hand grips are usually placed just outside the legs ( abit wider than shoulder width) but I place my hands on the inside of my 2 legs(the exact opposite), it is not very close together, just close to my legs. it kinda sounds like sumo deadlift but i reckons not because i don't use a wide stance , i use a regular stance like in a regular deadlift. i do this because i find it quite comfortable, stable for me. is there a problem with that? should i change?

Hey man!

Could you upload a video of your form so I can see what you look like from the front and side?

It's hard to say without seeing if your form breaks down or now.

Also, this article should help you a lot as well!

I have another question about grip because I've just re-watched Scott's YouTube series on deadlifts: why would you prefer matched grip as opposed to mixed grip?

Sarah,

Mixed grip locks the bar in tighter for your grip since your thumbs are opposed. Your thumbs are what really keep the bar from rolling out of your hand. When the grip is the same, it takes pure forearm strength to keep the bar from rolling out of your hands since you just have two thumbs holding it back. With mixed grip, you have 5 fingers holding it in - 1 thumb from one hand and 4 fingers from the other hand.

The one caveat with mixed grip is you have to be very careful when you lift heavy and make sure both arms stay dead straight throughout the movement or you risk tearing the bicep and/or distal tendon of the bicep with the palm facing away from you. When palms face you, the load is placed more on the entire arm and shoulder. When palms face away, an inordinate amount of load is placed on the biceps.
