Maxing out

How often should I find my one rep max for bench press?

I don't usually do my one rep max as often as I used to, how often should I find it? And how many reps should my other sets be if I'm looking for my one rep max?

@Harmon_Black Hey man! Glad you managed to get a post here in the @forums!

It depends on your goal. But I'm guessing your goal at the moment is increasing your strength and one rep maxes? If that's the case, you'll want to be strength training for sure (more low rep work on your compound movements especially), but you don't want to test your 1RM too often. If you do, you'll just tax your Central Nervous System and make it harder and harder to recover. Ideally you'd only test your 1RM every 4 - 6 weeks minimum. The weeks leading up to that would be working on building your strength in reps anywhere from 2 - 8.

Have you looked at the PPL program for example? The compound lifts in that program are set-up to help you improve your 1RM! https://muscularstrength.com/program/push-pull-legs

My goal is to build both strength and muscle. I’m probably switching from the bro split back to PPL

@Harmon_Black Yeah man, if you want to try and focus on a little bit of both then the PPL program will be a good choice for you!
