Hey Lady Hermanites! I’m sure you all are making some new health/fitness goals for the New Year. I know this time of year I always evaluate my current fitness level to make goals to achieve the level I truly desire. I see so many women getting excited to lose weight, join a gym, walk with a friend, or change up their diet.

I also see a lot of women doing low impact workouts or low impact cardio. I like to ask these women the reason they chose that workout and what their goals are. The most common response I get is, “I really just want to tone up and lose body fat”. After I hear this redundant line I then ask why they believe the workout they are doing with help them achieve this. They then say, “because if I lift too heavy and workout super hard I will just get big muscles”.

I do not blame most of the ladies that say this. Women have been fed this information for so long, and it has made many women think they need to lift lightweights at a low-moderate impact. The truth is this is garbage! The more weight we lift and the harder we go the more fat we burn. Not only do we burn fat by pushing ourselves hard, but the more muscle we have on our bodies the more fat we burn on a regular basis. Muscle needs more energy than fat does, which is why we burn more fat.

Now when I talk about more muscle I do not mean huge bulging muscles, but rather the kind of muscle that makes you look toned and lean. Trust me, getting huge muscles is hard for guys and even harder for girls. Women have to try really hard to get big muscle like that.

The point I really want to make here is PUSH YOURSELF to the MAX ladies! When you hit the gym don’t stick with the usual lightweight low impact workout you were told would get you lean and toned. Go to the gym and hit a circuit so hard you are gasping for air and drenched in sweat! Your health/fitness goals will take a turn in the direction towards success and having the body you really want to have.

Make your goal this New Year to hit your workouts hard. The second your brain tells you that you cannot do one more rep DO one more rep and repeat. The minute you plan to give up and take a break DON’T take that break. Take each workout as it comes and implement these strategies every single time. Before you know it you will surely look good naked, and lets face who doesn’t want that?

I have been making steady progress through the intensity of my weight training. I have increased from 2kg to working with 12.5 kg now. Recently saw a video about the importance of working with lighter weights as well, any truth in that?

I've been lifting for over a year and have gained strength and muscle, but due to lack of cardio I'm still not happy. You're right, you have to push hard and sweat for great results. I've had some bad advice that you just need to lift and you'll burn fat. I'm small and appear fit in clothes but I'm not cut because I've done low impact all year with lifting. It's frustrating but I'm doing something about it now-my body needs high intensity training. I can just kick myself because if I did it right when I started I'd be where I want fitness wise already. I guess my new goal is lose body fat by kicking it into high gear! ;)
