I know this is for 'Lady Hermanites only', but everyone can read it... so if you're a (curious) man but don't want to know a tad too much about our monthly problems, you should go back to the other threads

Ladies, I'm pretty good with staying on track, counting macros and calories and writing everything down, but I've experienced that on the 2nd day of my period I really CRAVE carbs.

And to be honest, for my sanity's sake: I eat them. A lot of them. And enjoy that...

I'm curious, do you have any 'problems' or different feelings about certain things while walking the red carpet?

Kassi,

Being a man and not experiencing monthly cycles, I can only offer you my input based on human biology. During your Period, hormone levels are high and for some people they are all over the map. Everyone's body is different and their reaction to the rise of the various hormones is different. In your situation, your craving for carbs could be your body's reaction to the varying hormone levels occuring during your monthly cycle. I think you are doing the right thing and addressing the craving. The body is a very adaptable machine and it knows what it wants and when it wants things. It also tends to "remember" what food sources meet the body's requirements. Carbs and/or glucose could be something your body needs more of on Day 2 of your monthly cycle.

Erica may have much better insight than I.

Hey gorgeous Kassi!

Actually I don't have any idea about RED CARPET thingy! but I make some research about the MOOD and BEHAVIOR of womens during the cycle period. Hope it will be a help to you. =(

Wait for the Ladies to post their own opinion here. They know best!

Mood and behavior

The different phases of the menstrual cycle correlate with women’s moods. In some cases, hormones released during the menstrual cycle can cause behavioral changes in females; mild to severe mood swings can occur. The menstrual cycle phase and ovarian hormones may contribute to increased empathy in women. The natural shift of hormone levels during the different phases of the menstrual cycle have been studied in conjunction with test scores. When completing empathy exercises, women in the follicular stage of their menstrual cycle performed better than women in their midluteal phase. A significant correlation between progesterone levels and the ability to accurately recognize emotion was found. Performances on emotion recognition tasks were better when women had lower progesterone levels. Women in the follicular stage showed higher emotion recognition accuracy than their midluteal phase counterparts. Women were found to react more to negative stimuli when in midluteal stage over the women in the follicular stage, perhaps indicating more reactivity to social stress during that menstrual cycle phase. Overall, it has been found that women in the follicular phase demonstrated better performance in tasks that contain empathetic traits.

Fear response in women during two different points in the menstrual cycle has been examined. When oestrogen is highest in the preovulatory stage, women are significantly better at identifying expressions of fear than women who were menstruating which is when oestrogen levels are lowest. The women were equally able to identify happy faces, demonstrating that the fear response was a more powerful response. To summarize, menstrual cycle phase and the oestrogen levels correlates with women’s fear processing.

However, the examination of daily moods in women with measuring ovarian hormones may indicate a less powerful connection. In comparison to levels of stress or physical health, the ovarian hormones had less of an impact on overall mood. This indicates that while changes of ovarian hormones may influence mood, on a day-to-day level it does not influence mood more than other stressors do.

Hey John,

That is very true. The body knows exactly what it wants and needs. I actually talked to Erica about this last night on our way home from me picking her up at the airport. She said she craves carbs as well and the best thing that works for her is sticking to a diet. It helps her stay on track.

But I told her to come here and tell her story.. lol

Thanks man!

I really have no idea about this red carpet.. but when I read it lately, I have now an ideal why womens are so moody during their cycle period! You should be aware of Erica during her cycle period because she might slap you in your face for no reason! I just read that on the other studies and most of the womens do that! ahahahahahaa

Hope it will be a big help for the Lady Hermanites here!

Kassi,

we really need to get some other women trying to help each other out on such matters. Lol. But the guys did a good job lending some advice. I no longer have periods YEEHAW!! Lol. But we all react differently when our hormones get involved. I never had craving but for 1 or 2 days a month I was a real b*tch thankfully for everyone else thats over hehe. I've raised three daughters one was a crier, one was a sleeper, & one craved the carbs. Can you imagine our household when we were all on at the same time. My poor husband lol. i know many women that experience the cravings. You are not alone. I hope that answered your question :)

That is exactly how I think, John. We should listen to our bodies, if they are yelling at us.

But I don't wanna be mistaken here, there's still a big difference between:

'Hmm, I don't know, maybe I could eat more bread. Even if that would mean too much carbs for today.'

and

'EAT THAT DAMN BREAD, GIRL! YOU WANT TO SURVIVE? EAT IT!'

(a bit exaggerating just to make it clear)

Thank you for your post!

Mike, thank you for showing serious interest and doing good research!

But don't think that all of us slap you guys... We only start a (better: verbal) fight when there's a reason for it Unfortunately we don't always understand each other's reasons, lol.

The other thing that shouldn't be forgotten is birth control with hormones. If a woman takes for example a monophasic pill, her hormones are kept on one level until she takes a break. That means no crazy ups and downs the entire time, just during the break.

Kassi,

I've always been a sucker for carbs!! I found if I eat too many though, cellulite can start to form at the top of my thighs, no matter what my weight or body fat. For me during that time of the month I crave chocolate and sweets, badly!! I hate grocery shopping during that time because I find myself staring blankly at the Oreo cookies, just listening them whisper sweet nothings to me (then they went and created mega stuffed!!!). If you are worried about eating carbs in excess, this is what I try to do with chocolate. First I go and buy some dark chocolate. maybe 70-80%. It's healthier for you than regular chocolate and I make SURE to stick to the serving size. I will eat it each night after dinner until it's gone and then that's it. I won't buy anymore until next time. If you constantly deprive your body of things you crave, when you do eat them you will binge eat. I know I do. Maybe try making the second day of your period your cheat meal/day. Allow yourself to go over your macros and calories (not too crazily) so you can satisfy that craving. Hopefully that should help. Just like your workouts, your diet needs to be switched up from time to time too so that spike in calories can actually benefit you. Hope this helps!!

Hi Michelle,

(I'm sorry, I've been quiet and offline for a while)

that sounds like a very good way to deal with your cravings, thank you for sharing that!

And I know the sweet sound of Oreo cookies too well... *sigh*

This is all well and good when it comes to cravings but how do you deal with water retention?? This has plagued me for like forever and even though I keep to the diet plan I can't help but let the hormone brain take over and think that I am gaining weight and inches for all the wrong reasons.

AND.... I also struggle with focus and motivation too. Feel like I just want to curl up and do nothing - which goes totally against how I am the remainder of the month. VERY FRUSTRATING!!
