Hey Scott,

Love all the content you have on Youtube. It's been SO helpful for the wife and I... can't thank you enough! Here's my situation...

I'm 42 years old, 6'3" and was just under 250 lbs in July 2017 when I said enough is enough! Dieted for 4 months down to 228. Body weight routines at home 3 times a week for 2 more months down to 217. Started lifting weights the end of January. Since then my weeks have been:

Monday - Push
Tuesday - 1 hour spin class
Wednesday - Legs
Thursday - 1 hour spin classs
Friday - Pull
Saturday - 1 hour spin class
Sunday - REST

And I'm running a pretty manageable 500 cal deficit with one or two cheat meals a week. I'm down to 196 lbs now.

Here's my dilemma... I'm itching to lean bulk and put on muscle because I'm a "lightly muscled" individual... BUT i have some fat around my love handles and back that pisses me off and I really want to toast it off first before I start building up. I figure I'll have to go down to 180 or so to get rid of it all but that's going to take another 3 months or so. Really would like your advice... Keep dropping before the bulk or just say screw it at this point and start adding muscle???

Also I've recently switched my weights days to full body workouts so I'm hitting everything more often. Here's the routine I'm following

Monday - Full Body Strength focused
Wednesday - Full Body Hypertrophy focused
Friday - Full Body Endurance focused

and still doing spinning Tue/Thurs/Sat to help melt the fat off.

Thanks for listening!

Peace
Sean

I think you are to a good point to start bulking. Build some muslce for a while then cut off the added fat. If your goal is to cut a little more then bulk, do it. You can't really go wrong on whichever direction you decide to take now. Congrats on all the weight loss too man!

I have been training coming up on 6 years and have made some great gainz. I've done a lot of trial and error on myself as well as learned from others and through research online. I've come along way in strength and size since I've started. I will continue to learn and make myself better each day.  Thanks for your input. Thanks too about the weight loss... It's been a long road but consistency has paid off. Not starving myself and not killing myself with too much cardio so it's been not too painful.

Hey @razor, you are very welcome for the content man! So glad it has been helping you 😊

Congrats on the 50+ pound weight loss too, that is so amazing! Proud of you man. To be honest, those love handles probably only look prominent at the moment becuase you don't have a ton of upper body mass. So actualy going into a lean bulk like Aaron suggested wouldn't be a bad idea to build up the upper body, for one, to actually create the illusion of a trimmer waist.

So I would suggest maybe a very small surplus.. like 200-300 calories, and keep doing cardio as well to really minimize any fat gain. Probably play around with carbs and carb cycling a little bit as well (e.g. few carbs on rest days).

Thanks for the input Scott. Truly appreciated. I think I'll start the lean bulk soon. Looking forward to eating a bit more! That will be a 700 calorie a day swing for me. Should definitely help me lift more and progress.

You I think it will help for you! Just keep in mind that you don't have to jump straight from one extreme to the other.. so don't suddenly start eating 700 calories more than you normally do tomorrow. Just increase your calories slowly.. like add 200 calories for 4-5 days.. then add another 200 for 4-5 days.. so that in about 2-3 weeks you get to your surplus. This will help your body adjust to the new intake so that you don't pile on fat super fast.
