Good morning all,

I am new to the website and still trying to figure my way around. I was hoping to get some help setting myself up on here with a workout routine. Any advice is welcome.

Goals:

  • lose weight (I plan on having my nutrition take on most the work here)
  • gain muscle (build a solid foundation) - I would like to continue weight lifting for the foreseeable future, so I am not looking for a quick fix type routine. Looking for something that will help me develop sustainable workout habits.
  • improve overall fitness

Background:

  • Male
  • 23 years old
  • 6 feet tall
  • 216 lbs (recently lost 20 lbs and looking to lose about 30 lbs more)
  • Just getting back to the gym after 2 year hiatus
  • I have been doing 30 min cardio / day for 1 month now and plan to continue
  • Have access to full gym
  • I have a good nutrition plan in place

Question to the community...what are my first steps? Where should I start?

Hope all is well!

-Tyler

Hey @TJames!

If I were you, I'd start at my Cheat & Recover program, but start as a beginner. Given you took two years off, it wouldn't make sense to go hard out right off the bat with the cheat reps.. you need to work up to it. But starting there will get you on a PPL split with a good amount of volume, it will give you a solid structure to follow for a weekly routine, and it will get you ready to start overloading. Plus it is based around minimal yet effective exercises for each muscle group - the basics, but lots of them.

It would also give you an extra month to get back in the groove while still losing a bit more fat. Like you say, the diet will be key to losing fat, but you can also keep some cardio and/or circuit training routines going with the C&R program to help with that fat loss. Anyway, take a look at the program and let me know what you think! https://muscularstrength.com/cheat-and-recover
