Are You Bulking Or Just Fat?

As a natural athlete will all this excessive fat gain do more harm than good in the future?

Bulking is a term that has been used and abused so much that it gives lifters experiencing excessive fat gain a false sense of hope when it comes to reaching their muscle gain goals.

So what’s the answer Nation? Is gaining 30lbs in a year necessary if only a fraction of that is going to be pure muscle?

As a natural athlete will all this excessive fat gain do more harm than good in the future?

Wow, that was simply an amazing video Scott ! I learned a lot here and I think this answers the question as to why I am not gaining the weight as rapidly as I did last year. I always knew that it gets slower year by year, but I never had any numbers. Now that I am here in the situation of zero rapid gains, information like this just gets me more focused and happy that it is not an easy journey ! One of your best videos so far Scott, keep it up man !

Mate love the video! About time people actually got some decent advice on youtube regarding "bulking." As you stated of course you will put on a little body fat when "bulking" but there are ways to help minimise this. Also people tend to want to bulk when they are above 12%. In my opinion you should never get above 12% at all!!

What do you think about people that bulk to get stronger in their lifts?

When does someone reach their genetic limit? I know Scooby has talked about how he has lifted for 30 years and now he doesnt gain anymore muscle or strength.

Good video Scott but...

what about the solution for lean gains??

I know everybody is different etc. but what is your "magic formula"?

Let me explain what I mean by that. For example let's say sb eating 2000 kcal a day with good balance of macros for maintenance so what amount that person should eat on lean gains protocol 2200 kcal? 2400 kcal?

Please be so kind and tell me another thing what you think about phasing your bulks and cuts.

I mean for example 12 weeks bulk then 8 weeks of cut or sth like that.

and in the vibe of that topic

HERMINATION!! Let's make some gainzzzzzzzzzz... :)

Thanks @William_Steinset.. but keep in mind that those numbers are subjective to puberty as well. You will see some massive gains when you hit 18 too. I know it!

Proud of you man!

You should have seen the war this sparked on my instagram... mainly because the ignorant people commenting didnt even watch the video.... lol.. obviously right?

Thanks Daniel!!! :)

Well @ohawkey if there was no genetic limit, everyone would be HUGE! and probably wouldn't need steroids to grow to be the size of these monsters today.

As for power lifting. That is a while new category... I know for the most part they hold more bodyfat for size/energy, but I would need to dig deeper into that subject before I said anything conclusive.

Hey @Mati102,

I do plan on doing a specific video on lean gains.... but that is why I linked to the meal plan video in this video. I will post it for you below. You can use it to figure out your macros.

Basically for lean gains you go 250-500 over your daily BMR. I discuss all this and more below.

Yeah, I've mentioned on the board a few times now that there is always a difference between training for physique and training for physical performance. I'm not saying that you can completely let yourself go and just claim you're training for strength (similar to the statement of 'I'm bulking bro!'), but there are different nutritional requirements to leaning out and hitting SERIOUS PR's.

Another anecdotal point I've got is that I've read / listened to some powerlifters claim that having a slightly higher bodyfat percentage helps contribute to some bracing / cushioning effects when lifting serious weights. Similar to how the hamstrings help with the wrap-around effect on squats, more central mass can (again, anecdotally) contribute to bracing of the core under say, a thousand pound squat.

Actually, most elite level powerlifters like Dan Green are bigger and as shredded as bodybuilders. They go to a meet with a bofyfat of no more than 10% and they look amazing. Holding body fat as a powerlifter is pointless because you are competing at a specific weight class. If you and another guy both weigh 200lbs but you are 8% and he is 25%, you obviously will have more muscle mass at the right places, and you will be able to generate more force.

In my opinion, powerlifters are as big or even bigger than bodybuilders because they are stronger. You will notice that some powerlifters have small arms in comparison to their body, but thats just genetics + the fact that they arent injecting any oils in the arms, just to make them look bigger. Injecting oil would actually result in increase possibility of tears and would decrease performance.

Yeah, good point. My reference point was specifically from heavyweight / superheavyweight (whatever the highest weight class) powerlifting which is quite different from the other classes as you mentioned. From memory now that you raise the point, most mid-weight class lifters are shredded.

Olympic lifters / strongman / powerlifter physiques are so badass.

Yea I agree. What you are saying about the cushion effects is correct actually. I have actually heard it before. Maybe thats because those world records are always achieved by "fat" athletes. They probably still have incredible amounts of muscle under that though in order to generate that kind of power and strength.

Yea, 2 random examples that come to mind are Johnnie Candito ( powerlifting) and obviously Elliott Hulse ( all kinds of lifting :D)
